Welcome

Our Story

Hello everyone! My name is Terry Hung and this is my wife AJ.  We moved to Charleston, SC from Atlantic City, NJ and have been living here since 2011. Charleston, SC has the nicest people you’ll ever meet, best food you’ll ever taste and now the best tea you’ll ever drink!

It all started with a…

DREAM.  A dream to serve some authentic Taiwanese Boba Tea for everyone to experience and enjoy.  My wife and I were actually searching for a place in Charleston, SC to have some Boba Tea and didn’t find one that quite hit home. So we set out to make our own. We set up in our kitchen for months mixing, stirring, brewing, and tasting boba tea until we made it taste even better than home.  And now, we are both excited to bring our love for Boba Tea to the Low Country and we hope that you will love and crave for it the way we do!  So come in, say hello, and enjoy a great cup of tea!

So what is Boba?

Tapioca aka boba is a starch that is extracted from a cassava root (think potatoes) and made into little chewy pearls found at the bottom of the drink. The consistency of a boba pearl is that of a soft gummy bear.

Is bubble tea the same as Boba Tea?

Yes, some people call it boba tea, others call it bubble tea. The term bubble tea comes from the floating bubbles when the teas are shaken. Not a fan of the bobas? No problem, you can always order it without them or try the jelly.

What is up with the fat straws?

These straws are so that you can enjoy both the tea and the bobas at the same time!

And leak free cups?!

All of our drinks are sealed with a special sealing machine that prevents drinks from spilling. When you are ready to drink, take out the fat straw with the angled end down, and punch it through the seal and start drinking!

Tapio, I've been craving Boba Tea for the longest time and I'm so glad I stopped in! I haven't had Boba Tea for about 3 years, since I moved here. Where I used to live, you can basically find it everywhere. Anyway, we were greeted with very friendly staff. The selection of jellies are above and beyond what I've expected. Usually Boba places only have the tapioca. But Tapio has all the Asian jellies that I love!! The flavor selection is great too. They have the typical Asian Boba Tea flavors like Taro, Lychee, etc.and then the fruit smoothy flavors like watermelon, strawberry, mango, etc. We sipped on our Boba teas in a cute little hangout room that had a TV playing FungBros and K-pop, Jenga, and comfy seating. It's the perfect hangout spot... it's also perfect for doing work and homework. 🙂

Best milk tea I've had in a long time! Surprise find while walking around. Very good flavors. Less sweet than Quickly recipes (which I really like) and very good blends. Lavender tea is just enoigh to be flavorful but not overpowered and the plain Milk Tea option is smooth and perfect. I'm from out of town, but this will definitely stay in my list for future returns.

Starbucks? Who that?

My name is Angel. And I am a Tapio-holic. It has been 2pm since my last Boba tea. I have visited Tapio a half a dozen times in less than two weeks. Stop. Can't. Tapio serves milk, fruit and frozen teas infused with exotic flavors. Peruse the website, check out their menu and how to order your teas. So far I've tried milk tea, coconut coffee, lavender, lychee, kiwi and pomegranate flavors. There's an internal squeal of delight from stabbing a colorful jumbo straw into a nifty heat wrapped cellophane lid. It's as wonderful as popping bubble wrap. Adding Boba or jelly toppings with the tea completes the flavor party in your mouth. If my car ever got stolen, Tapio tea would just make me feel better. It is addicting. Joyous. Super sippin' fun.

I honestly was baffled by the praise for Tapio, not understanding how tea could possibly be that good. But today my boyfriend and I stopped by and were astonished by the many flavor choices and combination options. And I LOVE options. It can actually be a little overwhelming but the staff are great with recommendations. I opted for the coconut milk tea with lychee popping bobas. I didn't know you could get the little bubble things (my terminally) any way but the traditional jelly-like consistency, which was never my favorite. But the juice filled popping variety are PHENOMENAL. I am obsessed with them. I love how they explode into flavor. Boba tea just got way more appealing to me. If you have mixed feeling about traditional boba give this option a try! Heck, even you don't I highly recommend the popping variety. Aside from these little gems of awesome- the coconut flavor was rich and sweet probably the best I have had. It's a very strong coconut flavor, which I appreciated. My boyfriend got the mango fruit tea with strawberry boba. I liked his but it was almost two sweet. I preferred my milk tea option. Still, his was very flavorful and tasty. I was already thinking about going back before I finished mine. Seriously, with all the options and the great first impression, I have to saw all the rave reviews are very deserved. We got the large option (4.50) with the extra .25 cents for the popping boba)- this puts it basically on par with Starbucks more or less, but I was far more excited about this drink than anything I've tried in a coffee shop! I'd highly recommend it.

I had never had boba tea and had always wanted to try it so Saturday I was walking by and stopped in the owner Terry was behind the register and he was super helpful and friendly and it was had a nice cafe atmosphere. He explained what boba was and I made my selection. I was not disappointed! I had the frozen tarro with boba and it was spectacular. I'd say it's replaced Starbucks frappachinos for me this summer and it's closer to my house than Starbucks little to say I plan on being back many many times to come.

Love this place. One of the first things I did when I moved to Charleston was look for bubble tea and Tapio is wonderful. I have not been disappointed by anything I have tried. Would recommend the matcha green tea latte and Thai coconut coffee with regular boba or any of the jellies. They recently moved to a larger location and now also have food! The pork belly over rice and popcorn chicken were both delicious. They had just run out of the chicken over rice, so I'll have to try it next time. Staff are super friendly and helpful and the owners are just wonderful people.

I've been here in the Low country my whole life, and have tasted a number of bubble teas from various places. But none of them have blown me away like Tapio has! The constant consistency of my ever so favorite Milk tea, the cute little cafe vibes, and the great staff that always greets me with a smile. Definitely a 5/5 stars for this place!
